Replenishing the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast Wine Cellar

Bill & I spent a few days in the Oregon Wine Country recently.  Our mission: replenish the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast wine cellar.  When you own an eastern Oregon lodging property as far away as we are from high end wine shops, you take the initiative and stock your own as a service for your guests.

Image courtesy of Lange Estate Winery.One of our stops was at Lange Estate Winery and Vineyards near Dundee, Oregon.  Joanne was manning the tasting room at the time.  We arrived with instructions from our lodging host to seek a good Pinot Noir or two, and perhaps a Pinot Gris, from a winery they hold in high esteem.

Joanne educated us about Pinot Noir wines–that there are at least two types, classic “burgundian” and “new world.”  After tasting a few, we decided upon both.  The 2006 Pinot Noir ‘Freedom Hill Vineyard’ is definitely a fruit-forward, big Pinot.  In contrast, the 2006 Pinot Noir ‘Three Hills Cuvee’ is much more restrained.  Both will be available in our Joseph Oregon Bed and Breakfast wine cellar.

The Pinot Gris we started with is probably the best I’ve had.  Of course, we’re bringing back a case of their new release, the 2008 Pinot Gris ‘Reserve’.

The Lange Estate Winery labels are very distinctive.  Most have an extremely intricate fly fishing lure prominently displayed on the label.  The originals of some of the flies are on display in the tasting room.  With Wallowa Lake and other fishing hot spots near our bed and breakfast, I wouldn’t be surprised if this wine isn’t purchased for the attractive label as much as the fantastic wine inside.

In total:  one case of Pinot Gris, one split case of Pinot Noir.  And we were just beginning our wine quest.  More to follow.
