Things to Do in Wallowa County in Early Spring

Ice breaking up at Wallowa Lake

Are you looking for things to do in Wallowa County as the winter turns to early spring? As I write this post, the ice on Wallowa Lake is breaking up. Migrating birds are starting to arrive and are puffed up against the cold. Snow is still on the ground today, and tomorrow it might melt before it snows again. But, it won’t be long until Spring arrives with flowering snowbells and daffodils (and other things the deer won’t eat in the Bronze Antler Bed & Breakfast gardens). So, what’s to do in early Spring? Here are some easy things to do options for planning your early trip to Wallowa County:

1. An 8.4 mile round trip hike down the lower Imnaha River from Cow Creek to the Snake River (higher clearance vehicles only) with a stop at the Imnaha Store and Tavern on the way back.
2. Touring one of the local artistic bronze foundries (Parks Bronze in Enterprise or Valley Bronze in Joseph) to see the artistic bronze casting process in action. With any luck, you might see a molten bronze pour too!
3. Attend an intimate musical performance at Tunesmith Night on the second Saturday of each month through May. Hosted by the nonprofit Wallowa Valley Music Alliance, Tunesmith Night features three singer songwriters performing their own original songs. Hear them before they’re too famous to play in such an intimate setting!
4. Snowshoe or hike up the East Moraine trail, or learn more about efforts to create a real trail through the Wallowa Land Trust. Great views of Wallowa Lake up close and the Seven Devil Mountains of Idaho in the distance.

And of course there’s plenty of dining, shopping and other things to do available in the towns of Joseph or Enterprise. Just because we’re at the end of the road doesn’t mean everything shuts down when there’s snow on the ground!

We hope you’ll be as pleased as we are to experience what early Spring in Eastern Oregon can offer. When you’re done with one or more of the above, a bubble bath and cozy bed with flannel sheets awaits you at the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast. Our newly installed boiler ensures hot water for all just in case you’d like to linger in the tub first.
