One of the things this town (and Wallowa County too) is known for is its concentration of artists. Joseph Oregon Artists is a comprehensive website for learning about many of the artists, their art, local art galleries, and the home studio tour program.
The tour is free and there’s no obligation to purchase anything. It’s the artist’s way of introducing the guest to the artist’s work in a very intimate setting. And, since the tour is by appointment, it’s a very flexible, year ’round activity–rain, shine, snow or otherwise.
Jim and Anne Shelly are both accomplished potters. Their studio, Fireworks Pottery, is located a few miles out of Joseph on the way to the Hurricane Creek trailhead. I can’t imagine not being able to create lovely art in such a peaceful setting.
Jim is known for his versatility in hand-built pieces. Anne spins a mean wheel. And you can see them both in their spacious studio. I was recently visiting with Anne in their studio and was impressed with the view from the windows–only forest and sunshine.
Even if you’re not interested in purchasing but would like to learn a thing or two about building your own kiln, then a trip to Fireworks Pottery during your Eastern Oregon vacation is a good idea. Jim built the kiln on the property himself. Both he and Anne are very interesting people and easy to talk with about their art and the processes they use to achieve it.
A visit with Fireworks Pottery is a great thing to do while you’re visiting Joseph Oregon. We’ll be happy to arrange a tour for you when you’re a guest here at the Bronze Antler Bed&Breakfast. Let us know when you’re booking your reservation.
